Dolphin pool cleaner review

Prices and warranty terms checked 5 September 2026

Dolphin is the most-searched robotic pool cleaner brand in Australia, and it is also the one where the machine matters least. Every Dolphin cleans a pool competently. What separates it from the cheaper brands is what happens after something breaks, and what separates one Dolphin from another is a warranty structure that has almost nothing to do with price.

We earn nothing from Dolphin. Maytronics runs no publisher program in Australia, so there is no commission on this page and no link here that pays us. We cover the brand because it is what Australians search for, and because leaving out the market leader would make every other comparison on this site worthless.

Who you are actually buying from

Dolphin is made by Maytronics, and in Australia it is sold and supported by Maytronics Australia Pty Ltd, ABN 87 148 058 495, out of Oxley in Brisbane, on 1300 693 657. That single sentence is the whole argument for the brand. Of the five brands sold here, Dolphin and Zodiac are the only two with a named Australian company standing behind the warranty, and Dolphin is the only one with a published repair turnaround.

Maytronics sells direct through two of its own Australian sites at the same prices, and also through a dealer network. There is no advantage either way: both are Maytronics Australia supply. The distinction that does matter is between an Australian purchase and an overseas one, and we come back to that below.

28 residential Dolphin cleaners, $1,049 to $3,999, prices checked 5 September 2026. The 2 Dolphin Skimmi models are surface skimmers rather than floor cleaners and are left out of this table on purpose. Maytronics also sells a separate entry-level brand called Niya, which is not a Dolphin and is not counted here.

Never buy the base model when a Bonus exists

This is the single most useful thing on the page and it takes ten seconds to act on. Maytronics sells 3 models in two versions, base and "Bonus", at exactly the same price. The Bonus SKU adds a caddy and a cover, and carries an extra year of warranty. There is no version of the arithmetic where the base model wins.

Model Base price Base warranty Bonus price Bonus warranty What the Bonus adds
S 100 $1,599 2 yr $1,599 3 yr Caddy, cover and a third year of cover
S 150 $2,099 2 yr $2,099 3 yr Caddy, cover and a third year of cover
S 250 $2,699 2 yr $2,699 3 yr Caddy, cover and a third year of cover

Ask for the Bonus SKU by name. Retailers list both, and search results and price comparison sites will happily show you the base version because it is the shorter product name. If a dealer quotes you the base model at the Bonus price, that is the whole saving gone.

Warranty length does not track price

Buyers reasonably assume a longer warranty means a better machine. Inside Dolphin's own range that assumption falls apart. These models sell for identical money and carry different terms.

Same price Models at that price Warranty
$3,399 S 400 4 yr
X 40 PLUS 2 yr
$2,699 S 3000 3 yr
Liberty 400 3 yr
S 250 2 yr
X 30 2 yr

The clearest case is the pair at $3,399: the S 400 carries four years and the X 40 PLUS carries two, for the same money, from the same company, on the same day. If you were shopping that price point on specification alone you would never see it. Read the warranty column before you read anything else.

The cordless battery carve-out

Dolphin sells 6 cordless models, and on those the headline warranty term is not the term that matters. The battery is treated separately, and it is capped by charge cycles as well as by time:

  • Liberty 200. Two years on the robot excluding the battery. The battery gets 24 months or 300 charge cycles, whichever arrives first.
  • Liberty 400. Three years on the robot excluding the battery. The battery is guaranteed above 70 per cent capacity for 36 months or 400 cleaning cycles.
  • Eon 100. Two years including the battery, capped at 24 months or 300 cycles.
  • Eon 120d. Three years including the battery, above 70 per cent capacity for 36 months or 400 cycles. The best cordless battery terms Maytronics publishes.

Run a cleaner twice a week and 300 cycles is roughly three years, so on the Liberty 200 the cycle cap and the time cap land in about the same place. Run it every second day through summer and the cap bites first. Maytronics logs usage and charging on a smart card inside the battery, so this is not a limit you can argue your way around after the fact.

Two different warranty documents are in circulation, which is worth knowing before you read the wrong one. The corded models ship with an Australian document that expressly states your Australian Consumer Law guarantees cannot be excluded. The Liberty and Eon cordless models use a newer global template issued by Maytronics International in Israel, which covers the first purchaser only, voids on a second-hand purchase, and requires that you bought from an authorised reseller.

Service is what you are actually paying for

No other brand in this category publishes anything like this, so it is worth being specific. Maytronics Australia runs an authorised dealer and service centre network rather than a single send-in depot, with a locator that filters specifically for warranty robotic repairs. It states a two working day turnaround from receipt, subject to parts, and makes the point that you do not have to send a cleaner interstate and wait on transport. You choose whether to drop the machine off or have a courier arranged.

Two details that get missed. Repair work itself carries a 12 month warranty on all parts replaced, so an out-of-warranty repair is not a coin toss. And spare parts are stocked and sold locally in Australian dollars including GST, filters, baskets, brushes, power supplies, chargers and cables, with a separate parts dealer locator. That is what makes a six year old Dolphin worth repairing rather than replacing, and it is the reason the resale market for them exists at all.

Registration is not required. Maytronics states that failing to register will not diminish your warranty rights and asks only that you keep proof of purchase. Keep the invoice anyway, but you are not going to lose a claim on paperwork.

Where Dolphin is genuinely weak

  • It publishes no filtration micron ratings at all. Across the entire Australian range Maytronics uses the words "fine" and "ultra-fine" and no numbers, while Zodiac and Wybot both publish microns. If fine debris is your problem, you cannot compare a Dolphin to anything on this specification, and we are not going to invent a figure to fill the column.
  • Two apps across one range. MyDolphin Plus runs the X, S and M series; Maytronics One runs the Liberty 600, Eon and Skimmi models. Buyers who assume a single ecosystem get a surprise on their second purchase.
  • It is the expensive option. $1,049 is the entry point, against roughly half that for the cheapest cordless units from other brands. Some of that premium is the service network, and some of it is simply brand.
  • Grey imports are unsupported. Maytronics Australia states it is not the supplier of an overseas purchase and has no obligation to honour that warranty or to repair or replace the unit for free. The saving on an imported Dolphin is real, and so is the loss of the only thing that makes a Dolphin worth the premium.

Where to buy one

Maytronics sells direct online in Australia, and the dealer network covers the rest. Of the models we track, Clark Rubber carries 8 and Poolwise carries 13, and the two chains split the range rather than duplicating it: Clark Rubber leans to the X-Line and Liberty, Poolwise to the S-Line, M-Line and Liberty.

A note on X-Line versus S-Line, because the internet is confident and wrong about this. Both lines are current, neither replaces the other, and Maytronics has published nothing saying they are the same hardware under different names. Their specifications differ materially: the X 20 and the S 1000 are both $1,699, but one does floors and walls on a 15 metre cable and the other does floors, walls, waterline, steps and ledges on 12 metres. Compare the actual specification, not the letter.

Which Dolphin to buy

  • Small or above-ground pool, floor only. The S 50 at $1,049 does what it says and nothing more. Note its two year term is limited: 24 months on the motor unit, cable and power supply, and only 12 months on everything else.
  • Typical suburban inground pool. One of the Bonus SKUs. Same price as the base model, three years instead of two, and the caddy is genuinely useful.
  • You want the longest cover. The S 400. Four years at $3,399, where the X 40 PLUS gets two for the same money.
  • You want cordless. The Eon 120d, on the battery terms rather than the robot. Three years including the battery at above 70 per cent capacity is the best battery commitment in the Australian market.

Common questions

Are Dolphin pool cleaners worth the money in Australia?

On the machine alone, Dolphin is not obviously better value than Aiper or Beatbot at the same price. What you are paying the premium for is Maytronics Australia: a local company with an ABN, a national authorised service network, a stated two working day repair turnaround and spare parts sold here in Australian dollars. On a $3,999 machine that is the difference between a repair and a write-off in year three. We earn no commission on Dolphin, so there is nothing in this for us either way.

Which Dolphin has the longest warranty?

The S 400 and M 700 carry four years, the longest in the residential range. Everything else runs two or three. Crucially the term does not follow the price: the X 40 PLUS and the S 400 are both $3,399 and one carries double the cover of the other.

Do I have to register a Dolphin to claim warranty?

No. Maytronics states plainly that failing to register does not diminish your warranty rights, and asks only that you keep proof of purchase. That is a real point of difference from Zodiac, which requires both registration and a tax invoice before a claim is approved.

Is a grey-imported Dolphin covered in Australia?

No. Maytronics Australia states that a unit bought from an overseas site was not supplied by it, may not comply with Australian standards, and that it has no obligation to honour the overseas warranty or to repair or replace the product free of charge. Your Australian Consumer Law rights run against whoever sold it to you, which is cold comfort if that is an offshore marketplace seller.
