Best pool cleaner for inground pools

Pool ratings, prices and warranty terms checked 5 September 2026

An inground pool asks for three things an above-ground pool does not: wall climbing on a hard surface, a waterline scrub, and enough range to finish a pool that may be twelve metres long. 56 of the 66 cleaners we track publish all of floor, wall and waterline cleaning, and this page sorts them by the pool rating each manufacturer actually publishes.

How these are chosen. On published specifications, Australian prices verified at the retailer on 5 September 2026, and documented warranty and service arrangements. We have not run these machines in a test pool and do not present spec comparisons as though we had. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, the table says so.

The ratings are not published in the same unit

This is the first thing to know, because it quietly breaks most comparisons. Dolphin and Zodiac publish a maximum pool length in metres. Aiper, Beatbot and Wybot publish a surface area, sometimes in square metres and sometimes in square feet, and in two cases they publish both with figures that do not agree with each other.

Those are not the same claim. A 300 square metre rating on a machine with a three hour battery says nothing useful about a 20 metre lap pool that is four metres wide, which is 80 square metres of floor but a long way to travel. We list each rating in the unit the manufacturer published it in and never convert one into the other.

Rated to 12 metres or less

The band that covers most Australian backyard pools. A rating in metres is published by Dolphin and Zodiac, and it refers to pool length rather than surface area. 15 models.

Rated by area, not length

Aiper, Beatbot and Wybot publish a surface area instead. An area rating tells you nothing about whether the machine reaches the far end of a long, narrow pool, so we do not convert it into a length. 20 models.

Steps, benches and sun ledges

Almost every inground pool built in Australia in the last twenty years has a wide entry step or a sun ledge, and almost no product page tells you whether the machine cleans them. Where brands do address it, they are specific: two Dolphin models publish a step and ledge capability with a depth attached, one to 30 centimetres and one to 20. At the other end, one Aiper manual states plainly that the machine does not clean steps or benches and is not suitable for infinity pools.

Everything in between is silence, and silence is not a yes. If your pool has a ledge you care about, ask the retailer to point at the line in the manual before you buy.

Corded or cordless

On an inground pool this is a genuine trade, not a generation gap. 22 of the 56 models here are corded and the rest run on a battery. A corded machine cannot run out mid-cycle, which is the failure mode that matters on a long pool, but the cable has to reach a power point and it will tangle. A battery machine is easier to drop in and lift out, and it introduces a consumable part that no manufacturer publishes a cycle life for.

If you go cordless, read the runtime as a ceiling. It is quoted on the gentlest cleaning mode, so a full floor, wall and waterline cycle on an inground pool runs shorter than the headline figure. The cordless comparison and the battery register cover that in detail.

What decides it, once the pool fits

Once you have a shortlist that is rated for your pool and does the waterline, the remaining differences are smaller than the price gaps suggest. Mapping and app control do not change how clean the pool gets. Filtration figures cannot be compared across brands, because Dolphin publishes no micron rating at all. Running cost is a rounding error at roughly $4.86 to $7.85 of electricity across a season, against about $358 a year for the pump, so it should not enter the decision. See the running-cost register for the arithmetic.

What is left is who repairs the machine in Australia, and that varies far more than price does. Warranty terms in this set do not track price: identical prices carry two years from one brand and four from another, and the most expensive machine in the register has one of the shortest terms and no local service network. The warranty register lays out the evidence brand by brand.

Models we left off this page

8 cleaners in our register publish floor or floor-and-wall cleaning but no waterline capability. They are perfectly reasonable machines and several are explicitly aimed at above-ground pools, but on an inground pool they leave the job that most annoys owners undone. They are covered on the above-ground page and listed in full in the specification register.

Common questions

What size robotic pool cleaner do I need for an inground pool?

Match the manufacturer's published rating to your pool, and if you are at the top of a model's range, go up one. Ratings are not published in a consistent unit: Dolphin and Zodiac state a maximum pool length in metres, while Aiper, Beatbot and Wybot state a surface area. An area figure says nothing about whether a machine can reach the far end of a long, narrow lap pool, so the two are not interchangeable.

Do robotic cleaners clean pool steps and sun ledges?

Some do and most do not, and this is rarely on the front of the product page. Two Dolphin models publish a stated step and ledge capability with a depth figure attached, while one Aiper manual states outright that the machine does not clean steps or benches and is not suitable for infinity pools. If your pool has a wide entry step or a sun ledge, treat step cleaning as a specification to confirm rather than assume.

Corded or cordless for an inground pool?

Both work. Corded machines never run out mid-cycle, which matters on a large pool, but the cable has to reach from a power point and it tangles. Cordless removes the cable and adds a battery that degrades and usually cannot be replaced by you. Of the 56 waterline-capable models on this page, 22 are corded and the rest run on a battery.

Is a robot worth it over a suction cleaner on an inground pool?

For most inground pools, yes, for two reasons that have nothing to do with cleaning power. A robot does the walls and the waterline, which a suction cleaner cannot, and it runs on its own motor instead of forcing extra hours onto your filtration pump. The pump is one of the largest electricity loads in a house with a pool, so the cheaper cleaner is partly paid for in pump hours.
