Best automatic pool cleaner in Australia

Prices and specifications checked 5 September 2026

Buying the wrong category of cleaner is a more expensive mistake than buying the wrong model within a category, so this page settles the category question first and then names the machines worth shortlisting in each price band.

How these picks are made. On published specifications, Australian prices verified at the retailer on 5 September 2026, and documented warranty and service arrangements. We have not run these machines in a test pool and we do not present spec comparisons as though we had. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, the tables say "not published" rather than filling the gap.

Pick the category before the model

Almost every automatic cleaner sold in Australia is robotic, suction or pressure, and they work in genuinely different ways. We have a full explainer on how the three types differ, so this page does not repeat it. The short form, as a buying decision:

  • Gum trees and heavy leaf litter: pressure cleaner with a large bag, or a robot with a high-capacity basket. A plain suction cleaner will block on bark and gum leaves and you will spend weekends unclogging it.
  • Fine dust, little organic debris, tight budget: a suction cleaner is genuinely adequate and much cheaper to buy, if you accept the extra pump hours.
  • You want the walls and the waterline done: robotic, and specifically a model rated for waterline cleaning. 57 of the 66 robotic cleaners we track publish that capability. Nothing in the other two categories does it properly.
  • Above-ground or soft-sided pool: a light unit rated for it, or a basic suction cleaner. Most full-size robots are heavy and are not rated for that wall construction. See the above-ground page.
  • You want the least handling and the lowest running cost: robotic, and ideally cordless. 38 of the models we track run on a battery.

What this register covers, and what it does not

Everything priced below is robotic. We track 72 models across 5 brands and we do not maintain a suction or pressure register, for a reason worth stating rather than hiding: those categories have almost nothing comparable to publish. A suction cleaner has no motor, no runtime, no filtration rating of its own and no navigation, and its real operating cost lands on your pump rather than on the product. A spec table of suction cleaners would be a table of hose lengths.

So if a suction or pressure cleaner is the right category for your pool, the explainer will tell you what to look for and we will not pretend to rank machines we have no data on.

Under $1,200

13 models. Floor cleaning, usually walls, sometimes the waterline. This is the band where the repair question decides everything, because a machine with no Australian service path is a consumable. That is a defensible trade at $500 and a poor one at $1,150.

$1,200 to $2,600

31 models. The sensible band for a typical Australian backyard pool. Floor, walls and waterline, a real pool-size rating, and in the better cases a company here that will repair it. Most buyers should shop in this band and stop.

$2,600 and above

21 models. Mapping, app control, longer cycles and larger baskets. Genuinely useful on a large pool. On a standard one you are buying convenience features rather than a cleaner pool, because neither mapping nor app control changes how clean the water ends up.

Two figures that should not decide it

Running cost. A robotic cleaner uses roughly $4.86 to $7.85 of electricity across a full swimming season depending on your state, or about 9 to 15 cents a cycle. The pool pump costs around $358 a year by comparison. No sensible purchase decision in this category turns on the difference between two robots' electricity use, and anyone selling you one on efficiency is selling you a rounding error. The running-cost register shows the working.

List price. 8 of the 65 models above were selling below RRP on the day we checked, the Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra by $1,100. Every table on this site leads with the selling price and shows RRP beside it, because a comparison quoting only RRP overstates what these machines cost. Discounting is heaviest around late November.

The figure that should decide it

Who repairs the machine in Australia. Warranty terms in this register run from one to four years and they do not track price at all: two machines at the same price carry two years and four years respectively, and the most expensive robot in the set has a two year term and no Australian service network behind it.

We should be straight about our own position here. The only brand on this page that runs an affiliate program open to us is Wybot, and it is also the brand with the thinnest Australian distribution and an empty warranty page on its own Australian store. Dolphin pays us nothing and has a registered Australian company, a head office, a phone number and an authorised service network. That is the ranking on the merits, and we have not adjusted it. The warranty register sets out the evidence so you can check the reasoning rather than take our word for it.

Common questions

What is the best type of automatic pool cleaner?

It depends on your debris, not your budget. Heavy leaf litter from gum trees suits a pressure cleaner with a large bag or a robot with a big basket. Fine dust and silt on a tight budget suits a suction cleaner. If you want the walls and the waterline done, only a robotic cleaner does that properly, and no amount of money spent on the other two categories will change it.

Are automatic pool cleaners worth it in Australia?

A professional pool clean runs roughly $63 to $150 a visit, so an automatic cleaner pays for itself against paid servicing within a season or two. Running it costs almost nothing: roughly $4.86 to $7.85 of electricity across a full swimming season depending on your state tariff, against about $358 a year for the filtration pump.

Do suction cleaners cost more to run than robots?

In practice yes, even though a suction cleaner has no motor of its own. It runs off your filtration pump, so getting a full clean usually means running the pump longer, and the pump is one of the largest electricity loads in a house with a pool. A robot runs on its own low-voltage motor and does not add pump hours at all.

How much should I spend on an automatic pool cleaner?

Street prices for the robotic cleaners we track run from $500 to $4,899. Most buyers with a standard backyard inground pool should be shopping between $1,200 and $2,600, where floor, wall and waterline cleaning becomes standard. Above that you are paying for navigation and app features rather than a cleaner pool.
